Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick tool to determine if a person in within the healthy weight range. While this method has its limitations, it is widely used in hospitals and clinics as a screening measure to estimate the amount of body fat.
The BMI formula used for healthy non-amputee adults is NOT applicable for people with amputations. This is because the BMI formula does NOT account for the weight of the lost body part. Use of the on-amputee BMI formula for amputees will result in LOWER values.
